UPDATE – Serious crash, SH3, Kaitoke, Whanganui

Police can now confirm two people have died following a serious crash south of Whanganui today.

Emergency services were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on SH3 at Kaitoke at around 5:30pm.

Sadly, two people were located deceased at the scene.

A third person was flown to hospital in a critical condition.

The road has since reopened and an investigation will follow into the circumstances of the crash.

Serious crash, SH3, Kaitoke, Whanganui

Police are responding to a serious crash on SH3, Kaitoke, just south of Whanganui.

Emergency services were alerted to a report of a crash involving two vehicles at around 5:30pm.

The number of people involved and their injuries is being determined.

The road is currently closed and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Night closures Weld Pass, SH1, Blenheim: postponed

The maintenance work is now likely to occur in October. The exact dates will be communicated closer to when they are confirmed.

“The reason for the postponement is the impact upon the freight industry currently with irregular ferry sailings combined with the urgent need to restock South Island supply depots and warehouses,” says Waka Kotahi Regional Manager Maintenance and Operations Peter Brown.

“We appreciate the need for freight to get to its destination as efficiently as possible currently and the need for the supply chain to have minimal delays. We are able to push this work out a fortnight and will communicate the new schedule in a week or so.”

Northbound closure of SH51 planned next week for barrier repairs

The road will be closed to northbound traffic from the Marine Parade/Ellison Street intersection to the Awatoto Road intersection on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 September, between the hours of 9am and 3pm each day.

Northbound traffic will detour via Te Awa Avenue during the closure period. Southbound traffic can continue to use SH51 past the repair site, but there will be a temporary speed restriction in place for the safety of crews and road users.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and factor additional time into their journeys if travelling during this period. Waka Kotahi also asks motorists to take extra care when travelling past the repair site and to adhere to the temporary speed limit.

Rubber hitting the road in Te Tai Tokerau

“161 lane kilometres of state highway will be renewed, almost half of that completed before Christmas,” says Waka Kotahi Northland System Manager Kobus Du Toit.

This activity includes drainage work and will improve state highways across the region making people’s journey’s more enjoyable.

“Weather conditions are critical so it’s fortunate Te Tai Tokerau is now in Level 2 allowing us to prepare the programme during spring,” says Kobus Du Toit.

Resealing will start this month and ramps up in October as the days become longer and warmer.

Kirikopuni on State Highway 14 west of Maungatapere will be the first to see work done. Crews will be carrying out road rehabilitation – where the road is dug up, repaired and re-laid as new, followed by similar work in Tangiteroria later in the year.

Our pre-Christmas asphalting programme will include work at locations on State Highway 1, starting at Puhoi and moving north to sites including Te Hana, Kaiwaka, Whangarei, Ōhaeawai and Kaitaia. Work in these areas will be carried out at night in order to minimise disruption.

“We ask all motorists to slow down and keep to temporary speed limits.  The speed limit applies on both sides of the road even though work may only be occurring in one lane at a time. This helps to keep our teams safe, and slow-moving traffic also helps to bed in the new seal and reduces the movement of loose stone chips,” says Kobus Du Toit.

The crews will do their bit by working hard to minimise inconvenience and delays. We urge people to be patient, plan their journeys and allow extra time.

As usual, maintenance work will pause during busy holiday travel periods like Labour weekend, Christmas and New Year.

Serious Crash – SH5 – Napier

Police are responding to reports of a vehicle collision on State Highway 5 in Bay View, Napier.

Staff were called to the scene at 11.45am where a truck and car have collided.

Initial indications are that one person is seriously injured.

The road is closed and detours will be in place soon.

Overnight closures of SH1 Cobham Drive, Hamilton, from 26 Sept

The closure will be in place from 7pm to 6am each night, with traffic diverted along Galloway Street and Naylor Street/Cambridge Road. Northbound traffic will remain on Cobham Drive.

The closure is allow work to take place on the southbound lanes at the intersection of Galloway Street and Cobham Drive.
