Plan your journey to avoid delays on the Forgotten World Highway

Work to seal the remaining unsealed section of State Highway 43 will start Monday 15 November.

Funded through Kānoa – Regional Economic Development and Investment unit, the project will improve safety and boost the region’s economy, while retaining the picturesque journey and protecting the natural environment.

Due to the constrained environment through the gorge and the heavy machinery required to undertake the work, the road will need to be closed  for periods while work is undertaken.

The road will be closed to traffic for a 2km section north of Moki Road, through the gorge, from 8am -12pm and 1pm – 5pm Monday to Friday until March 2022.

North and southbound traffic will be let through the site at the following times under Stop/Go traffic management with temporary speed limits in place:

9am

10am

11am

12-1pm (road open)

2pm

3pm

4pm

Motorists are asked to plan their journey to arrive at the gorge at these times to avoid delays of up to one hour.

Crews will clear traffic at other times if there are vehicle queues and emergency services will be permitted access at all times.

Lane closures on Girven Road next week

These lane closures will allow for testing and site investigations in the middle of Girven Road ahead of the construction of the permanent road in this area in early 2022.

Girven Road is anticipated to be one lane in each direction from 5am Monday 15 November, with all lanes restored to traffic in both directions by 5am Thursday 18 November.

Works will be undertaken during days shifts; however, lane closures will remain in place day and night. Access to Bayfair Shopping Centre and Gloucester Road will be maintained throughout the investigations.

During the three-day lane closure:

  • Only one lane of Girven Road headed towards the Bayfair roundabout will be able to proceed straight at the Gloucester Road signalised intersection.
  • Only the right-hand lane will be able to turn right onto Girven Road from the Bayfair Shopping Centre carpark at the Gloucester Road signalised intersection.
  • The first vehicle entrance/exit to Bayfair Shopping Centre on Girven Road after the Bayfair roundabout will remain closed.
  • Existing vehicle access to all Girven Road properties will be maintained.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists are not expected to be impacted by these lane closures.

As part of these works, the material underneath the road will be tested to determine what loads it can bear to inform the extent of work required for future road construction.

From Monday 15 November, Tauranga City Council (TCC) will be undertaking a trial, introducing a cul-de-sac on Links Avenue. As part of TCC’s trial, vehicle access along Links Avenue will be restricted. Buses, emergency services and rubbish trucks will still have access, but bus timings could be impacted. The trial is expected to last up to five weeks.

As a result of the overlapping of these separate works, delays are expected in the wider area and road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their travel.

Motorists are asked to drive with extra care through the Bay Link site, reduce their speed and follow the directions provided by traffic management signs.

Serious crash: Omokoroa

Bay of Plenty

Police are at the scene of a serious crash between car and a motorbike on Omokoroa Road, Omokoroa.

Emergency services were alerted at around 12:05pm.

One person is reported to be critically injured and a helicopter has been dispatched.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

The road is closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible as there are no diversions available.

Maruia Springs to Reefton, SH7 speed review – your ideas wanted

This 59km section of SH7 has been identified as a road where safer speed limits could help prevent people being killed or seriously injured from crashes.

“We want local people to share their thoughts on the current speed limits, including around places like local walking or mountain bike tracks, school bus routes, homes and workplaces,” says Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships James Caygill.

Between 2011 and 2020 (ten years), there were 112 crashes on this stretch of road, says Mr Caygill. One person was killed, and 17 people were seriously injured.

“We’re working toward a future where no-one is killed or seriously injured in road crashes in Aotearoa New Zealand,” he says.

“Making sure speed limits are safe and appropriate for the road and its surroundings is one of the most effective things we can do to help prevent people dying or being seriously injured on our state highways.”

Speed limits need to be appropriate for the risks on the road. The stretch of road between Maruia Springs and Reefton is a single lane in each direction, and includes sweeping bends, narrow shoulders, and some straight sections of road.  Hazards include power poles, dense vegetation, waterways and trees on the narrow shoulders.

“No matter what causes a crash, speed is always a factor in the severity. Put simply, the speed of impact can be the difference between walking away or being carried away from a crash,” Mr Caygill says.

“Talking with the community helps us understand how people feel about current speeds in the area, including on roads near schools, homes or workplaces.”

This information helps Waka Kotahi decide if a speed limit change is the best thing to do to improve road safety, where new speed limits might begin or end, and if any other safety improvements might be needed.

“We’d like people to tell us how safe they feel and if there are any other sites or information that we need to be especially aware of,” he says.

Update – one lane open, State Highway 1, Kuku

The southbound lane is now open on State Highway 1, Kuku, following a fatal crash this afternoon.

Police expect the northbound lane to reopen within the next 30 minutes.

SH1 Kuku closed due to serious crash

Emergency services are on their way to the site of the crash and Police will need to undertake an investigation, so the road will be closed for several hours.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and delay their journey, if possible, as there is no viable detour route.

Roadworks on SH5 Taharua Road start next week

Stop/Go traffic management and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place from 7am to 7pm from Monday. Minor delays can be expected.

Outside these hours the road will be open for traffic in both directions with temporary speed limits in place throughout.

Work is expected to take five weeks, weather permitting. 

As part of the work, the existing road material will be excavated and removed, with new material put in its place.

Contractors will also be replacing a section of SH5 near Rangitaiki after the Christmas/New Year period. Work is scheduled to start on 10 January 2022 and is expected to take six weeks, weather permitting.
