SH1 East Taupō Arterial road works

The resealing work will take place overnight between 6pm and 6am, and is expected to take five days to complete, with lane closures, detours and temporary speed limits in place.

During this time, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors will also be replacing approximately 150m of road surface on State Highway 5 near the Napier-Taupō roundabout.

Stop/Go traffic management and a 30km/h temporary speed limit around the roundabout will be in place.

Please allow an extra 5-10 minutes for the detour routes.

Detour routes

Detours will be in place between 6pm and 6am.

SH1 from Centennial Drive to Broadlands Road – southbound lane closure
Southbound traffic will be detoured down Centennial Drive and Broadlands Road to re-join SH1. An additional detour for westbound traffic has been added via Centennial Drive, south down AC Baths Ave and east on Broadlands Road to join SH1.

SH1 Broadlands Road to Centennial Drive – northbound lane closure
Northbound traffic will be detoured down Broadlands Road and Centennial Drive to re-join SH 1. An additional detour for westbound traffic has been added via Broadlands Road, north on AC Baths Ave and east on Centennial Drive to join SH1.

SH1 Broadlands Road to Napier Road – southbound lane closure
Southbound traffic will be detoured west down Broadlands Road then south down Miro street, Manuka Street, Māhoe Street, Claret Ash Drive, Ashwood Avenue and Crown Road then east on Napier Road to re-join SH1.

SH1 Napier Road to Broadlands Road – northbound lane closure
Northbound traffic will be detoured west down Napier Road then north on Crown Road, Ashwood Avenue, Claret Ash Drive, Māhoe Street, Manuka Street and Miro Street then east on Broadlands Road to re-join SH1.

Outside work hours the road will be open for traffic in both directions, with temporary speed limits in place throughout. Minor delays can be expected.

Temporary speed limits will be in place until the new surface has settled and the road markings have been repainted.

People are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys, keep to the temporary speed limits and follow the directions of traffic management staff and signs.

Serious crash, State Highway One, Amberley

Emergency services are responding to a three-vehicle crash on SH1, on the bridge over Kowhai River in the Amberley area.

The crash was reported to Police at about 2:50pm and the road is currently blocked.

Initial indications are that one person has serious injuries.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area or expect delays.

Serious crash, Halcombe

One person is in hospital after a crash in Manawatu last night.

It involved a single vehicle colliding with a barrier around 10:40pm at the intersection of Makino Road and McKays Line in Halcombe.

The sole occupant was airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition.

The Serious Crash Unit was advised, and investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Serious crash, State Highway One, Karapiro

Emergency services are responding to a two-vehicle crash on SH1, Karapiro.

The crash, at the intersection of Karapiro Road and SH1 (Tirau Road) was reported to Police at about 4.50pm.

Initial indications are that one person has serious injuries.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area or expect delays.

SH2 Takitimu Drive/Waihī Road overbridge works battle the elements

Prior to Waitangi Day weekend, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors re-opened all lanes on Takitimu Drive to reduce the expected congestion caused by holiday traffic over the long weekend.

Traffic management was reinstated immediately following the peak morning traffic period this morning, with one lane available in each direction. Weather permitting, the final surfacing layer, road marking and barrier reinstatement will take place before the morning of Monday 14 February.

Delays are expected through the site area during peak traffic periods. During the week, traffic will be switched onto different lanes to allow the various work activities to take place. Motorists are reminded to adhere to the temporary speed limits and follow directions from traffic management staff and signs.

Tender to repair SH39 Mangaotama Stream bridge awarded

The Mangaotama Stream bridge needs a new superstructure, which consists of the bridge deck and beams. Due to the condition of the current superstructure, heavy vehicles greater than 50 per cent of Class 1 have been detoured off the bridge since late 2021.  

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will be working with Oxcon CLL to establish the timetable for the repairs to take place says Waikato System Manager Cara Lauder. However, Covid-related supply disruptions have made scheduling projects difficult.

“While we prepare for the new superstructure, we would like to remind the freight industry that the local road detour route is narrow with single lane bridges, blind corners and accessways for farms and houses,” Ms Lauder says.

“While some heavy traffic will be required to use the local detour, we strongly encourage any trucks travelling from Hamilton or further north, towards Otorohanga, to use State Highway 1 and State Highway 3, which is far more suitable.

“Taking the state highway detour is shorter in distance, while only slightly longer in time and is a far safer route for trucks and drivers.”

To help keep everyone on the local road detour safer, temporary lower speed limits will soon be introduced. The local road detour for northbound vehicles is Meadway Road, Hams Road, Forkert Road and Ngahinapouri Road, with the same route in reverse for southbound vehicles.  

When the Mangaotama Stream bridge repairs take place, the bridge will need to be fully closed to all traffic. Further details about this will be shared with the community and freight industry once they are confirmed. 

“We appreciate the patience of the local community and the cooperation of the freight industry as we prepare for the strengthening of the Mangaotama Stream bridge,” Ms Lauder says. 

Motorists urged to take extra care as heavy rain hits Hawkes Bay and Gisborne

Waka Kotahi Regional Manager Maintenance and Operations Jaclyn Hankin asked motorists to drive to the conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.

“Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly and there is a chance we may need to close some roads due to flooding and slips.

“If you need to head home after the long weekend tomorrow, please stay alert, increase your following distances and keep your speed down.

“Watch out for unexpected hazards like surface flooding in low-lying areas, potholes, slips or fallen trees. Heavy rain can also reduce visibility”, says Ms Hankin.

  • Multiple slip sites on SH3 Mt Messenger are currently being cleared. The road remains open under stop/go traffic management
