Locations include:

• State Highway 25 between Te Rerenga and Kuaotunu – delays of up to 10 minutes for edge repairs. Work will be carried out between 6am and 6pm with Stop/Go traffic management and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h in place.
• SH25 near Whitipirorua Road intersection – delays of up to 10 minutes for road sealing. Work will be carried out between 6am and 7pm with Stop/Go traffic management and a temporary speed limit of 30km/h in place.
• Onetai Bridge on SH25, a temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place while routine bridge maintenance work is carried out.
  Contractors will monitor traffic flow and will work to minimise the impact of the works where possible, but motorists should expect minor delays when work is taking place. Outside work hours the road will operate as normal.

This work is part of the Waka Kotahi preventative maintenance programme to keep roads in a safe condition during the harsher winter months.

In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work may be postponed. Our contractors also carry out emergency works at short notice, for example slip repairs. We advise motorists to plan their journey before heading by finding out the latest information about delays or closures using the Waka Kotahi interactive Journey Planner tool (journeys.nzta.govt.nz).

Work sites for the week starting Sunday 1 August

• State Highway 30, Puarenga Bridge underpass: The Puarenga Bridge underpass is open with pedestrians and cyclists requested to take care as contractors continue with landscaping works in this area.
• State Highway 30, Puarenga Bridge: Contractors will be working to widen the footpath on the southern side of the Puarenga Bridge to join with the shared path at either end of the bridge. On Monday 2 August between 10am and 12pm, westbound left lane closures will be in place at Puarenga Bridge to pour concrete, which may cause minor delays.
• State Highway 30, median east of Puarenga Bridge: Contractors continue with landscaping works at the median east of the Puarenga Bridge. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times which may cause moderate delays.
• State Highway 30, Sala Street to Vaughan Road: The footpath on the northern side remains closed for public safety as contractors complete the shared path construction and landscaping works in this area. Shoulder/lane closures may be in place during off-peak times as part of these works which may cause minor delays.
• State Highway 30, Vaughan Road slip lane: The Vaughan Road slip lane from SH30/ Te Ngae Road will be closed intermittently on Monday 2 August between 6.30am and 11am to allow contractors to pour concrete for the shared path alongside the slip lane. This closure may cause moderate delays. Additional lane closures on SH30/ Te Ngae Road may be required as part of these works.
• State Highway 30, Ngapuna shops to Marino Road: Contractors are working along the northern side of SH30/ Te Ngae Road from just east of Ngapuna shops to Marino Road completing shared path works and surfacing against new kerbs. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times which may cause minor delays.
• State Highway 30, Tarawera intersection: Contractors continue to construct the concrete islands separating traffic travelling in opposite directions. On Tuesday 3 August during off-peak periods, the inside right turn lane into Tarawera Road from SH30/ Te Ngae Road will be closed, which may cause minor delays. Motorists are advised to adhere to the temporary speed limit, with the current surface not having sufficient skid resistance for higher speeds. The temporary speed limit of 30km/h will remain in place until final surfacing is completed in September.
• State Highway 30, Westbound Allen Mills Road to Anytime Fitness: On Tuesday 3 August, westbound traffic through this section will be reduced to one lane during off peak times to allow for installation of stormwater services, which may cause minor delays. From Wednesday 4 August, motorists are also advised there will be lane shifts in place through this section maintaining two lanes of traffic as per usual.
• State Highway 30, Marino Road and Allen Mills Roads:  The right turn into Marino Road from SH30/Te Ngae Road for southbound traffic remains closed and Allen Mills Road access is from Vaughan Road only. Allen Mills intersection with SH30/ Te Ngae Road remains closed to allow contractors to complete structural pavement construction this week. Motorists, in particular heavy haulage, are required to detour via Owhata and Vaughan Roads to access Allen Mills and Marino Roads. Electronic signage is in place to advise of the access restrictions.
• State Highway 30, Tarawera Road: Contractors continue working intermittently on the new watermain along the footpath. Traffic management will be in place and may include off-peak Stop/ Go operations. The footpath will remain open.
• State Highway 30, Allen Mills Road to Iles Road: Pedestrian access through this section is for business access and residents only as there is no through access to the Rotorua CBD. 

Temporary speed limits of 30km/h or 50km/h are in place for everyone’s safety at the above work sites, including when workers are off-site.

Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the signalised crossings at either Sala Street or Iles Road, and the temporary pedestrian crossing at Tarawera Road.

Work will be undertaken between 9pm and 4am (Tuesday morning). A detour will be in place for those travelling toward Te Puna, with traffic directed down Te Puna Station Road, then Te Puna Road, before rejoining SH2 at the Te Puna roundabout.

A helicopter will be used to carry special machinery into areas around the corridor where road access isn’t possible.

“Ground conditions can have a significant impact on the scope and design of projects, which is why we are making sure we investigate every part of the proposed project site,” says Andy Thackwray Waka Kotahi National Manager Infrastructure Delivery.

From Monday August 9 crews will be in the area checking and monitoring ground conditions, movements and water quality to measure the strength of the ground and the physical conditions of the soil.

“Penlink will be located in a unique landscape with a wide range of highly valued flora and fauna. We are designing the road to protect the authentic quality of the area and natural features while at the same time creating a safe and efficient transport corridor,” says Andy Thackwray.

“Our environmental framework for Penlink reflects our commitment to protecting and preserving the environment, creating a green corridor through the peninsula.”
Heavy machinery such a drill rigs and flight augers will be used to gather the information, with soil samples taken from depths up to 30 metres.

The investigations will take place between 7.30am and 5.30pm from Monday to Friday with people able to visit  nzta.govt.nz/penlink to find updates on when and where work will be undertaken.

“Traffic management will be in place on some roads in Stillwater and the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, but we will be aiming to keep the disruptions to a minimum. Road users are encouraged to check the website ahead of time to prepare for any delays.”

While the physical testing is scheduled to be completed by October, Waka Kotahi will continue to monitor the sites to understand the seasonal changes in groundwater levels and water quality.

Penlink will provide surrounding communities with more sustainable transport choices by offering better access to public transport services and safer journeys for people walking and on bikes.

The proposed toll road will also open up new residential and employment areas in North Auckland including the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, Silverdale and Dairy Flat.

The project is funded by the Government through the New Zealand Upgrade Programme.
