Police can confirm one person has died and one other person has been seriously injured in the crash on SH3, Te Mapara, Waitomo.
The crash, reported shortly after 7:00pm, involved two vehicles.
The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene.
Traffic management and diversions remain in place.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
