Senior Network and Journey Manager Helen Harris says crews are continuing to monitor SH35, paying particular attention to areas that are known to be vulnerable during high rainfall and susceptible to coastal erosion.
“Yesterday we identified some increased coastal erosion at Turihaua Point, that occurred due to the heavy rain and high tides and swells we experienced over the last couple of days,” Ms Harris says.
“To keep people safe, the road is down to one lane with a speed restriction and we’re asking everyone to take extra care when driving through the area.
“Our contractor crews are keeping a close eye on the erosion, as we’re expecting the severe weather to continue over the next day or two. We’ll be looking at getting in there to repair it as soon as possible this week, pending consents and resourcing.”
A section of SH35 is closed 1.5km south of Lottin Point, due to a large slip. Crews will continue to work on this site to get the road reopened, but in the meantime people will not be able to travel through this section of SH35 and there are no detours available.
“Our crews are constantly monitoring road and weather conditions so they can quickly respond to surface flooding, slips and rockfalls. We’re asking everyone to be patient and adhere to temporary speed restrictions,” Ms Harris says.
“When it’s raining heavily, it’s important that motorists lower their speeds, keep a safe following distance, and take extra care around corners.
“People should also look out for surface flooding and debris on the road, and be mindful of our road workers who are out clearing hazards off the road and working to repair damage.
“We want to see everyone get to their destinations safely, so please stay safe and stay alert.”
