Delays are expected at times and motorists are advised to plan for these delays and allow extra time for their journeys.

Work sites for the week starting Sunday 20 June:

• State Highway 30, Puarenga Bridge underpass – The Puarenga Bridge underpass is expected to be open by the end of the week. Concrete pouring was delayed due to inclement weather.
• State Highway 30, Puarenga Bridge – Contractors are working to widen the footpath on the Puarenga Bridge to join with the shared path at either end of the bridge. Lane closures will be in place during off-peak times as this work progresses.
• State Highway 30, median, east of Puarenga Bridge – Contractors continue working in the median east of the Puarenga Bridge as they construct the turning bay opposite Hume Pine and the connection to the bridge median. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times.
• State Highway 30, Sala Street to Vaughan Road – The shared path on the northern side remains closed for public safety due to substantial delays in upgrading of services along this section. Shoulder/lane closures may be in place during off-peak times as contractors work on kerb, channel and shared path through this section.
• State Highway 30, Vaughan Road – The Vaughan Road slip lane from SH30/ Te Ngae Road will be closed from Tuesday 22 June and re-opened on the morning of Thursday 24 June. This will allow contractors to pour and cure concrete at the slip lane. Additional lane closures on SH30/ Te Ngae Road may be required as part of these works.
• State Highway 30, Ngapuna shops to Marino Road – Contractors are working along the northern side of SH30/ Te Ngae Road preparing driveways, kerbing and shared path for concrete. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times.
• State Highway 30, Tarawera roundabout – The last temporary roundabout remains in place as contractors complete the remaining sections of road and cabling for the traffic lights, before the signalised intersection is installed. Due to weather delays, the intersection is due to be operational by early-July. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times.
• State Highway 30, Tarawera Road – Contractors continue installing the new watermain along the footpath. Traffic management will be in place and may include off-peak Stop/ Go operations. The footpath will remain open.
• State Highway 30, Allen Mills Road to Iles Road – Pedestrian access through this section is for business access and residents only as there is no through access to Rotorua CBD. See below map for pedestrian access routes.

Temporary speed limits of 30km/h or 50km/h are in place at the above work sites, including when workers are off-site.

Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the signalised crossings at either Sala Street or Iles Road, and the temporary pedestrian crossing at Tarawera Road.

In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work may be postponed.

The email states “your licence plate number will expire” and provides an expiry date that is generally on the same day as the email was received.

This is part of a sophisticated phishing campaign designed to harvest customers’ credit card and driver licence information.

The email doesn’t include specific vehicle details like the make or plate number, and the expiry date most likely won’t match the one on the rego label on your vehicle.

If you’ve recently received an email asking you to renew your rego, please check the email details carefully. If the email was genuinely sent from Waka Kotahi, it will include your specific vehicle details including your:

• plate number
• vehicle make
• expiry date of your current vehicle licence.

If the email doesn’t include your specific vehicle details or seems suspicious, don’t click on any links and don’t provide your personal, driver licence, credit card or banking details. If you’ve unintentionally clicked on a suspicious link and entered your personal, driver licence, credit card or banking details, we recommend you:

1. Contact your bank immediately and have them stop any payments that may have been made. You may also need to request a new credit/debit card.
2. Contact Waka Kotahi at email hidden; JavaScript is required or on 0800 822 422 to cancel your current photo driver licence card and arrange for a replacement (it will cost $38.20). Please include the word ‘scam’ in your email subject line.
3. Report the email to your local Police cyber-crime division.

5. Don’t delete the email. Instead, put it in your junk mail folder in case the police need it for further examination.

A left lane closure is currently in place on Matapihi Road near the Bayfair roundabout. Motorists are still able to travel in all directions from Matapihi Road (along State Highway 2/Maunganui Road and towards Girven Road), however ongoing delays are anticipated today (Thursday 17 June) and tomorrow (Friday 18 June). No alternative detour is available.

Works are in progress to address the issue. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their travel.

The first 10,000 plants – a mix of riparian and wetland natives – were taken to the first of what will be many planting sites last Thursday, with another 10,000 plants going in this week.

“This is an exciting milestone for our landscaping team who have been working towards this point for over a year,” says Lonnie Dalzell, Regional Manager Infrastructure Delivery.

“This planting is the first of almost two million native shrubs and trees that will be planted as part of the project’s commitment to leaving the environment better than we found it.”

The plants have been growing since last year at Kauri Park Nursery in Ashhurst, using seed sourced and grown early in the project. Twelve thousand seedlings were raised at Manawatū Prison through a partnership with Rangitāne o Manawatū. The plants were carefully packed into 600kg bags and individually ferried by helicopter to the planting site, for planting out over several days.

The landscaping team has been preparing planting sites at the Woodville farm and the Massey Tuapaka farm, in readiness to receive around 255,000 native plants this year. Planting at these sites is expected to run through to October 2021 and planning is underway for planting on other farms next year.

Site preparations included animal and plant pest control, installing water reticulation and building fences to keep the working farms separate from stream and wetland planting sites.

The rehabilitation of 38km of streams through riparian planting is part of the project’s ecological offset.

“The planting that has begun is part of this work, which will create significant ecological benefits by improving stream habitat and water quality,” Mr Dalzell says.

“Right now the focus is on getting the plants in the ground and so far we have been lucky with the weather. Over the long term, we’re committed to ensuring that all planted areas will be managed until they are fully established and will be protected for many years to come.

“Starting planting now, away from the construction works, means these areas will have four years of growth before the road is opened.”
