UPDATE – Serious crash, Mosgiel, Dunedin

Police can now advise that one person has died following a serious crash in Mosgiel, Dunedin this afternoon. 

Sadly, the person died at the scene. 

One other person suffered serious injuries in the crash and has been taken to hospital. 

The intersection of School Road South and Gordon Road remains closed.

Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

The Serious Crash Unit will be examining the scene.

Serious crash – State Highway 58 – Whitby

Police are responding to a single vehicle collision on James Cook Drive in Whitby this evening.

Police were notified of the incident on State Highway 58 at 4.30pm.

One motorcyclist involved in the incident is in a moderate condition.

The road will be closed for some time and we advise motorists to avoid the area if possible.

SH2 Remutaka Hill closed Monday night for essential repairs

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill will be closed overnight on Monday 26 July for essential repairs following the recent severe weather event.

The road will be fully closed to traffic from 9pm on Monday 26 July until 4am on Tuesday 27 July, to allow contractors to safely complete repairs.

The work will include removing slips, clearing culverts, replacing barriers and repairing the road.

Closing the road to all traffic will create a safer environment for contractors to carry out this work and will minimise disruption to busier daytime traffic.

Contractors will escort vehicles that need to get across the hill at approximately the following times:

  • 10.30pm – Hutt to Featherston
  • 11.30pm – Featherston to Hutt
  • 12.30am – Hutt to Featherston
  • 1.30am – Featherston to Hutt.

Delays on SH1 north of Wellington

A wastewater main has burst on SH1 near Whitford Brown and crews are onsite carrying out emergency repairs.

This work requires one of the northbound lanes to be closed and will lead into peak traffic hours.

Waka Kotahi anticipates that this will impact on evening traffic, with queues expected to start south of Porirua.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to delay their journey or take an alternative route, if possible.

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash at the intersection of School Road South and Gordon Road in Mosgiel, Dunedin.

Police were called to the two vehicle collision around 3:15pm.

Two people are reported to be seriously injured.

Motorists are asked to delay travel if possible or avoid the area.

SH30 Rotorua works for week beginning Sun 25 July

Some delays are expected at times, and motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

Work sites for the week starting Sunday 25 July

  • State Highway 30, Puarenga Bridge underpass: The Puarenga Bridge underpass is open with pedestrians and cyclists requested to take care as contractors continue with landscaping works intermittently through this area.
  • State Highway 30, Puarenga Bridge: Contractors will be working to widen the footpath on the southern side of the Puarenga Bridge to join with the shared path at either end of the bridge. Shoulder closures may be in place during off-peak times as this work progresses which may cause minor delays.
  • State Highway 30, median, east of Puarenga Bridge: Contractors continue with landscaping works at the median east of the Puarenga Bridge. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times which may cause moderate delays.
  • State Highway 30, Sala Street to Vaughan Road: The footpath on the northern side remains closed for public safety as contractors complete the shared path construction and landscaping works in this area. Shoulder/lane closures may be in place during off-peak times as part of these works which may cause minor delays.
  • State Highway 30, Ngapuna shops to Marino Road: Contractors are working along the northern side of SH30/ Te Ngae Road from just east of Ngapuna shops to Marino Road connecting services, surfacing against new kerbs and completing shared path works. Lane closures may be in place during off-peak times which may cause minor delays.
  • State Highway 30, Tarawera intersection: The SH30/Tarawera intersection is now signalised and the roundabout has been removed. There will be lane closures in place around the Tarawera intersection to provide a safe work area for the contractors to complete the splitter islands, the concrete islands separating traffic travelling in opposite directions. The temporary speed limit of 30km/h will remain in place until September when surfacing is completed. Motorists are advised to adhere to the temporary speed limit, with the current surface not having enough skid resistance at higher speeds. The final layer of surfacing will be applied in September when temperatures are warmer to ensure a strong bond between the two layers of surfacing.
  • State Highway 30, Marino Road and Allen Mills Roads: From Monday 26 July to Wednesday 11 August, there will be no right turn into Marino Road from SH30/Te Ngae Road for southbound traffic and Allen Mills Road access will be from Vaughan Road only. Motorists, in particular heavy haulage, are required to detour via Owhata and Vaughan Roads to access Allen Mills and Marino Roads. Electronic signage will be in place to advise of the access restrictions.
  • State Highway 30, Tarawera Road: Contractors continue working intermittently on the new watermain along the footpath. Traffic management will be in place and may include off-peak Stop/ Go operations. The footpath will remain open.
  • State Highway 30, Allen Mills Road to Iles Road: Pedestrian access through this section is for business access and residents only as there is no through access to the Rotorua CBD.

Temporary speed limits of 30km/h or 50km/h are in place for everyone’s safety at the above work sites, including when workers are off-site.

Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the signalised crossings at either Sala Street or Iles Road, and the temporary pedestrian crossing at Tarawera Road.

In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work may be postponed.

Traffic lights switched on for a safer State Highway 30/Tarawera Road intersection

Waka Kotahi Regional Manager Infrastructure Delivery Jo Wilton says final line markings and the switch over were completed last night (22 July).

“This upgrade will make the intersection safer, easier to use and more efficient at peak travel times, and it’s an exciting milestone for the project.

“We’re asking people to take extra care when travelling through the intersection as they get used to the new layout. There may be some delays as people adjust to the change, and the intersection will be closely monitored so adjustments can made to the traffic light phasing if needed.”

Ms Wilton says the upgrade has been a big undertaking for the community, with work on the intersection starting in September last year.

“The process to transform the intersection from a roundabout to a signalised intersection has involved careful planning, to allow us to undertake the work while keeping the intersection functional for road users.

“We want to thank everyone for their patience, and the businesses in the area for their cooperation.”

With the traffic lights now operational, the community is advised to expect the intersection to be an active worksite for the next few weeks as final works are completed.

Contractors will continue working at the intersection for about three weeks as they construct the concrete islands separating traffic travelling in opposite directions.

There will be occasional lane closures, additional signage, and a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place.

Waka Kotahi asks motorists to be patient as we complete these final steps.

The final layer of surfacing will be applied in September when temperatures are warmer to ensure a strong bond between the two layers of surfacing.

The signalising of Tarawera intersection is part of the $17 million Eastern Corridor Stage One project, improving SH30/Te Ngae Road from Sala Street to Iles Road. The project started in February 2020, with completion expected in late 2021.

SH2 at Karangahake is now clear following an earlier crash.

Police were called to the two-vehicle collision around 3:15pm.

Three people suffered serious injuries and one other person suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash.

Police would like to thank motorists for their patience while the diversions were in place.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
