Current overnight closure information 

Auckland roads and public transport 

Chains were required on the Lindis Pass between Tarras and Omarama earlier today with some drivers being convoyed through. North of Dunedin, care was required on the Leith Saddle, SH1.

What is ahead today and overnight?

Road snowfall warnings are in place overnight Wednesday (12 July) into Thursday on the Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur’s Pass and Porters Pass (SH73) in Canterbury.

In Otago, MetService road snowfall warnings are in place on the Lindis Pass (SH8) between Tarras and Omarama, the Crown Range Road between Wanaka and Queenstown, and SH1 south of Waitati into Dunedin over the Leith Saddle.

In coming days ice may well be a factor mornings and evenings in shaded spots on these routes so please take care, avoid sudden braking. Crews will be gritting and applying de-icing compound ahead of ice forming.

In Southland, the Milford Sound/Piopiotahi Road (SH94) requires chains to be carried tonight after 6 pm, from Hollyford to The Chasm. Snow is forecast Wednesday and into the evening, turning to rain by midnight. People should expect snow clearing equipment to be operating.

Wind watch in places top and bottom

There is also a strong wind watch in place for coastal areas of Southland, Clutha and Dunedin and at the top of the island around Golden Bay.

Winter driving tips

• Drive slower than you normally would – it only takes a split second to lose control in wet or icy conditions.
• Avoid sudden braking or turning movements that could cause you to skid.
• Use your highest gear when travelling uphill and your lowest downhill.
• For vehicles without anti-skid braking systems, to avoid skidding or sliding, smoothly pump the brake pedal in short bursts rather than pressing long and hard.
• Drive at a safe travelling distance because it takes longer to stop on slippery roads. In winter, especially in poor weather, double the two-second rule and leave a safe distance between you and the car you’re following.
• When travelling in fog, rain or snow, drive with your lights dipped.
• Makes sure everyone is wearing their seat belt throughout the full journey.

Crews working on the stretch of state highway south of the Wharerata lookout have been working to prepare the road for new asphalt.

However heavy and persistent rainfall over the weekend has covered the worksite in mud.

Roading crews are now working to clear the road of mud before lime is added to help dry the road surface.

Waka Kotahi Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti System Manager Martin Colditz says aggregate can then be added to the road before the long weekend.

“The area will receive foam bitumen treatment from next Tuesday before it is sealed with asphalt.

“It’s really important we can get this section of road cleared before the long weekend, and prepped for next week’s work.

“While this work is carried out over the coming days, we’re asking drivers to follow the lower speed restrictions and drive to the conditions. “A construction crew will also be onsite over the weekend to respond to any urgent need for works.

“The safety of all road users and our crews working on the road is paramount and if conditions change, we may need to close the road at short notice to complete the work. Please keep checking the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner for up to date changes.”

The next phase of work will require an evening closure of Hydro Road to allow for asphalt surfacing work.

Hydro Road will be closed overnight Monday 17 July from 8pm until 5am. This work is weather dependent and will take place at the same time on the following evening, Tuesday 18 July if required.

Alternative routes will be sign-posted, and people needing to access Karāpiro Village are asked to travel outside of this closure or allow extra time for their journeys.

The impact on SH1 traffic is expected to be minimal, although temporary speed limits remain in place near the work site.

Work is on track to wrap up at Hydro Road by 31 July.

The turnaround is part of the State Highway 1 Cambridge to Piarere Safety Improvements programme and is the first of five turnarounds that will be constructed on SH1 between Cambridge and Piarere over the coming year, along with additional median barriers.

The right turn out of Hydro Road onto SH1 towards Piarere will be reinstated after the turnaround is built, until the next turnaround is built north of Hickey Road, later in the year. At that point, the right turn out of Hydro Road onto SH1 will be closed.
