Providing no further slips come down – the highway will remain open 24 hours a day from now, under regular supervision.

SH25 has also opened up to two lanes on the other side of the Peninsula between Hikuai and Opoutere this afternoon, following pavement stabilisation and the installation of temporary ramps.

The highway has been greatly compromised by a major under-slip at Opoutere since 6 March. Contractors cut into the bank to create a temporary lane before completing a permanent retaining wall.

On the Thames Coast highway, there has been issues with cliff stability for a fortnight since two large slips fell on Saturday 24 June.

“It’s been a huge job for our contractors, not only clearing the initial slips, but facing the on-going risk and challenge of slip material continuing to come down over the last two weeks,” says Waka Kotahi Journey Manager for the Waikato, Liam Ryan.

“The job has involved clearing hundreds of cubic metres of material away from site and efforts to mitigate the risk of further slips with abseiling specialists removing loose rock, arborists bringing down dangerous trees and sluicing of the cliff face using water dumped by helicopter.

“The road has been fully closed multiple times for public safety and to enable the work to take place. Road users have put up with long delays until vehicles could be piloted through or the road was re-opened to one lane under stop/go.

“In all of the work around the Coromandel, the priority for Waka Kotahi contractors has been clearing a pathway for emergency services then ensuring communities are reconnected as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr Ryan says.

The work done on all slip sites should improve ongoing resilience on this highway, but road users should expect wet weather will continue to pose a risk around the Peninsula.

Work will resume at SH25 Opoutere on Monday which will require periods of one hour long stop/stop closures. Asphalt surfacing is planned to take place on Tuesday night 11 July with up to one hour stop/stop closures required overnight from around 7pm.

• The Metservice has issued a heavy rain watch for Nelson, west of Mapua, between 9 pm Friday and 9 pm Saturday. This will affect State Highway 60 from Motueka to Tākaka. Road users must drive to the conditions and should check weather and road conditions before travelling. Heavy rain can cause slips and localised flooding, and roads may be closed at short notice.

• This coming week sees monthly State Highway tunnel maintenance carried out in Wellington city on Monday and Tuesday nights. Contractors will be working in The Terrace and Mt Victoria Tunnels. Full closures are required, and drivers will have to take alternative routes while this work is underway.

Update 7 July 1:35pm:

Tomorrow’s closure (8 July) of SH1 Desert Road between Rangipo and Waiouru is not going ahead as planned.

Stop/Go is underway here today until 5pm for the removal of debris off the highway.

A new date for the closure for a truck recovery is to be advised.

SH1 between Taupō and Turangi will close on Monday 10 July for log retrieval.

The highway will be closed from 8am to 4pm between Taupō airport and Turangi with traffic diverted via SH41 and SH32.

The log retrieval is required due to a logging truck and trailer that went over the edge at Te Pōporo (Bulli Point) beside Lake Taupō on 5 July.

While the truck and trailer was successfully retrieved yesterday, Waka Kotahi contractors require an additional day to remove the remaining logs.

6 July 2023 4:36pm

State Highway 1 between Taupō and Turangi will reopen at 7pm tonight following the successful retrieval of a truck and trailer that went over the edge at Te Pōporo (Bulli Point) beside Lake Taupō yesterday afternoon.

The highway has been closed since 7am this morning with traffic diverted via State Highway 41 (SH41) and State Highway 32 (SH32).

Two cranes were required to recover the truck and trailer as well as some of the logs, which were loaded into a waiting logging truck. Unfortunately not all of the logs have been able to be retrieved and a further closure will be required early next week to remove the rest of them. Timing to be confirmed.

Geotech assessed the site and found cosmetic but no structural damage to the retaining wall.

SH1 Desert Road truck crash

Earlier today a produce truck crashed on the Desert Road, ending up in the ditch at Mangamate. Waka Kotahi contractors will close one lane on SH1 tomorrow to remove debris from the road. Road users should expect delays.

Saturday 8 July there will be a full closure between Rangipo and Waiouru from 8am till 4pm for the truck recovery.

Detour for northbound traffic is SH49 via Ohakune, SH4 and SH47 past Whakapapa and then using SH46 to re-join SH1 at Rangipo. The detour for southbound traffic follows the same route but in the opposite direction.

The programme is part of a wider commitment by Waka Kotahi and the Mt Messenger Alliance to tread lightly on the land and involves pest management, restoration and landscape planting, and ecological protection.

Te Ara o Te Ata: Mt Messenger Bypass

The project aims to greatly improve the natural environment in the Mt Messenger area, helping native species to thrive, as well as building a new 6km section of State Highway 3 in north Taranaki.

Since August last year, the Alliance team has trapped 449 rats in the project’s pest management area and wider Parininihi block. 171 possums have also been removed, along with 188 goats, 11 wild cats, and 29 stoats and weasels.

Additionally, the team has established more than 190km of a planned 250km of pest management tracks, and installed bait stations in forest around the new section of SH3.

Alliance lead ecologist Roger MacGibbon says predators such as rats, stoats and possums have, over decades, seriously impaired the mature native forest surrounding the route of the future 6km bypass, and the wildlife that lives in that habitat.

“Our pest management programme will support the forest’s recovery from this damage. We’re committed to leaving the area in a better state than we found it.

“Along with a major programme of restoration planting, our enduring pest management programme will help our iwi partner Ngāti Tama protect the whenua for generations to come.”

Part of the programme includes an upcoming aerial bait application that will make further inroads into the pest population. This joint Waka Kotahi/Department of Conservation operation will target rats and possums that can’t be reached by ground-based pest management work.

From this month, helicopters with calibrated buckets will distribute biodegradable 1080 bait along pre-determined and monitored flight paths over an area of 5,000ha. A ‘pre-feed’ of non-toxic bait will be sown first, to prime the rodents and possums, ahead of the 1080 bait which will be distributed at least five days later. Each operation will take a day to complete.

Aerial application of cereal pellets containing 1080 is the most effective control method over large areas. It is the only viable method in large, remote, forest-covered and rugged areas. Ground-based trapping and bait stations are effective in smaller more accessible areas, however the number of possum/rodents and stoats can sometimes overwhelm trapping networks. In these areas aerial 1080 can be used to supplement the existing ground-based work.

1080 dilutes rapidly to harmless levels in waterways – it is almost always undetectable after 24 hours. Because it is a natural compound (found in Australian and South African plants), 1080 is degraded by microorganisms in the soil and does not build up in insects, fish or plants.

1080: New Zealand pest control methods

Road crews will inspect the road surface and take samples ahead of future road reconstruction work as part of regular state highway maintenance.

The work will be done on Wednesday, 12 July, between 8 pm and 5 am. The location will be High Street, between Tudor Street and Woodlands Avenue.

To give our contractors a safe space to do their work, the road will be reduced to one lane with 30 km/hr temporary speed restrictions and Stop/Go traffic lights in place.

The work has been deliberately timed to happen at night when traffic volumes are lower, and every effort is being made to minimise the impact on residents and road users. However, some short travel delays can be expected.

Waka Kotahi appreciates road works can be frustrating. However, this work is essential to the state highway maintenance programme. Knowing the state of the road ahead of reconstruction allows our contractors to better plan jobs and projects.

As we head into the second weekend of school holidays, more people are likely to be on the road so it’s important to drive to the conditions.

This means slowing down, increasing following distances, switching headlights on, and watching for flooding and other debris on the road.

While Waka Kotahi contractors have comprehensive winter maintenance plans in place, they rely upon road users driving to the conditions. Slow down if the road is wet and avoid sudden braking.

Our contractors will have teams onsite monitoring conditions and ready to respond if needed.

Bad weather can see state highways closed at short notice. Drivers are encouraged to check the very latest weather conditions before they travel.

One lane of the highway between Mapua Drive and Aporo Road has been reopened to traffic heading towards Motueka. 

The other lane remains closed for traffic heading towards Mapua. Drivers heading in this direction must use local road detours.

Contractors and emergency services remain at the scene and efforts to fully reopen the road are continuing.
